It’s February already and the nights are slowly starting to get lighter and I am thinking about what to do with the garden this year as I need to get cracking on with buying the seeds I need if I am going to grow from scratch. The Leicester contingent of grandchildren will be staying for a week this month, during their half term, so I am hoping for a bit of pleasant weather so they can spend some of it outside and use up some of that never ending energy they seem to have. I definitely look forward to them coming but also look forward to the peace and quiet when they’ve gone and life gets back to normal again!
I have a few things to cover this month namely: Continue reading

Thornbury Golf Centre will be buzzing with activity on Friday 27th April when ACT (Arts and Community in Thornbury) will be hosting their Third Charity Golf Day in aid of the bold project to build a new community complex, with arts and performance facilities, in Thornbury. There are three perpetual trophies to be won. Catherine Johnson, our founder patron, has donated a trophy for the best mixed team performance whilst the best ladies’ team will win The Bond Girls Rose Bowl kindly donated by Bonds of Thornbury. The best men’s team will win a trophy generously donated by Gems of Thornbury and the team with the best overall score will win four tickets to the Welsh Open (May 31–June 3) which will be played at Celtic Manor, home of the Ryder Cup in 2010. We are going to introduce a putting competition this year so there are plenty of chances for golfing glory.
Tee times will start at 11am from both the 1st and 10th tees and the golf format will be a Stableford Bowmaker. The teams of four can be all men, all ladies, or mixed – and the team entry fee of £140 includes a delicious buffet and coffee after the game.
So come on golfers –give your support to this extraordinary and ambitious local project– swing into ACTion, putt your name down to play and you’ll have a ball!
Anyone interested in participating themselves, sponsoring a team, sponsoring a hole or providing competition prizes or raffle prizes should get in touch with the organisers.
To request an entry form or to offer help with any of the above, please contact Jackie Jackson on 01454 416421.

It’s official ~ the students of the Northavon School of Drama, who perform as the Northavon Youth Theatre Company, are very special! So much so that they have been given permission to perform a show that is up there with the Broadway greats; a ‘coming of age’ story that gives teenagers a voice for the first time and tells the truth about struggles with image, self consciousness and being ‘cool’ when the opposite sex is around! The story behind getting that first rusty old car to impress the ladies, trying to promote and live up to that all important image, or wait ~ should you really be taking your studies more seriously, or does that make you everything you don’t want to be! Adapted from the 2005 novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, Never Let me Go is the dystopian tale of three children who spend their early childhood at a seemingly idyllic English boarding school. As they grow into young adults, they start to appreciate the strength of their feelings for each other while at the same time trying to prepare themselves for the haunting destiny that awaits them. A thought provoking film that lingers long after the closing credits.
Filmed at various locations in the UK including Clevedon Pier.
Friday 16th March in the Cossham Hall starting at 7.30pm.
£5 on door for non members.
